Daloon, Leading Spring Roll Maker,
Nears its Own Golden Anniversary

A delivery of Daloon spring rolls is made to a retailer in Denmark early in the days of Daloon’s nearly half-century of producing frozen food products.

Some 49 years ago in Denmark, a Chinese scientist by the name of Sai-chui Van decided to introduce the then unknown spring roll to the Danes. The very first spring rolls were hand rolled in his home near Copenhagen and sold fresh in the Tivoli Gardens. This became the beginning of the highly successful business enterprise of Daloon, which in Chinese means “Great Dragon.”

Mr. Van discovered the advantages of freezing the spring rolls, and soon all Daloon spring rolls were distributed and sold frozen. His company became a pioneer in marketing frozen spring rolls in Europe, and has expanded its extensive product range to include a multitude of frozen snack products manufactured at its two production plants – one in Nyborg, Denmark, and the other in Newark, United Kingdom.

Since the very beginning, the focus has been on development – not only of new innovative products, but also of production processes and equipment. The result is a state of the art production facility with unique processing equipment and extensive use of robots in the Danish factory.

At around the time when Sai-chiu Van started his quest in Denmark, E.W. Williams published the first issue of Quick Frozen Foods International magazine. Over the years Ed Williams and Sai-chiu Van developed a close professional and personal friendship, and Quick Frozen Food International played a significant role in promoting Daloon’s products internationally.

Second Generation Carries On

As Ed Williams and Sai-chiu Van retired from active duty, they both left the running of their respective businesses to their sons, Andrew Williams and Hemming Van. The two grand old entrepreneurs have sadly passed away, but the second generation of Williams and Van share the same mutual respect for each other’s business as their fathers did. Each focuses on adapting and developing their respective businesses, thus ensuring that both Quick Frozen Food International and Daloon stand strong and will continue to do so for many years to come.

A vintage view of how spring rolls were manually made at Daloon’s first factory, back in the early 1960s. Here is how products today roll down automated production lines in Daloon’s highly efficient, modern factories.

From one company almost celebrating its Golden 50th Anniversary to another, here is Daloon sending cross-Atlantic congratulations to Quick Frozen Food International, and hoping for continued good cooperation for many years to come.
