Dawnfresh, Canadian Firm
Join On Compostable Shrimp Packs

The shrimp disappear into people’s stomachs, and the packages degrade totally and safely in garbage dumps.

A leading Canadian seafood firm is part of a transatlantic partnership to introduce a new product to the United Kingdom that is said to be the UK seafood industry’s first compostable packaging solution.

Scotland’s Dawnfresh Seafoods has developed the packaging and is launching it with an easy peel, jumbo, ready-to-eat prawn as its latest product in partnership with Canada’s All Natural Seafood Company.

As the first product to be branded by the All Natural Seafood Company, the prawns went on sale nationwide in the United Kingdom at ASDA, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Wal-Mart, during January in a six-month exclusive deal with the retailer.

“This product offers the consumer the taste benefits of cooked in shell prawns, but with the convenience of easy peel,” said Andy Stapley, managing director of Dawnfresh. “Unlike those supplied by competitors, these prawns have no added water to bulk them out and absolutely nothing added so, the consumer may enjoy a totally natural taste.”

The jumbo white king prawns, cooked in shell, are sourced in frozen form from Thailand, the world’s biggest producer of warm water prawns. The easy-peel prawns, which are free from artificial colors, phosphate and brine, are being sold in fully industrially compostable packaging. The tray, lid, peach pad and C-strap label are made from compostable or bio-degradable materials.

The tray and lidding material, which has previously been used only for dry goods, has been specially developed by Dawnfresh in conjunction with ASDA and packaging company RHP, for use with “wet” products. Products made by the All Natural Seafood Company are 100% natural.
