| Russia Lifts US Poultry Ban |
Russia has agreed to lift its long-running ban on U.S. poultry
over the use of chlorine for pathogen reduction, President Barack
Obama said at a joint press conference in Washington June 24 with
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
According to US trade officials, the two sides have signed a
letter to resume exports of US poultry not treated with chlorine,
and included three alternative pathogen-reduction treatments
(PRTs) -- cetylpyridinium chloride (sold under the Cecure brand),
hydrogen peroxide and peroxyacetic acid.
The agreement will require a new letterhead certificate with
verification from the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) that
PRTs used by the processing company are on the approved list. The
ban angered US chicken producers, who argued that the rinse was
safe. Prior to the ban, the US annually shipped Russia about $800
million worth of chicken, said the National Chicken Council.
Shares of chicken producers Tyson Foods, Pilgrim's Pride and
Sanderson Farms closed higher on announcement of the deal. The
announcement followed a round of meetings between Obama and
Medvedev, during which Obama offered a carrot, saying that the
United States would support Russia's bid to join the World Trade
Organization.
Russia buys mainly leg-quarters, often called Bush legs because
the trade began under the first President Bush. Leg quarters have
piled up in warehouses since the ban, as chicken companies have
been unable to divert all of Russia's share to other markets. As
of May 31, US Department of Agriculture reported 132.16 million
pounds in storage, up 37% from April and 89% from a year earlier.
